What is thrush?

Thrush is a yeast infection caused by the Candida species of fungus, usually Candida albicans. It usually lives harmlessly on the skin and in the mouth, gut and vagina, and does not cause any symptoms, because its growth is kept under control by normal bacteria.

But if the balance of bacteria changes – for example, when you’re pregnant, taking antibiotics, or under a lot of stress – the fungus can grow and cause symptoms of thrush.

Thrush can occur on the private parts (genital thrush), in the mouth (oral thrush) or on other parts of the body.

What are the symptoms of genital thrush?

Some people won’t have any signs or symptoms of thrush at all.

Genital thrush symptoms in women are:

unusual, white, thick vaginal discharge (often like cottage cheese)
itching and irritation or fissure (like paper cuts) around the vagina
pain when peeing or having sex

Genital thrush symptoms in men are:

irritation, burning and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin
a white discharge under the foreskin or on the head of the penis
an unpleasant smell
difficulty pulling back the foreskin

What causes thrush?

Your chances of developing thrush increase if:

your skin is irritated or damaged
you use products that irritate the skin such as perfumed products, bubble baths or vaginal washing products
you’ve recently taken antibiotics
you have poorly controlled diabetes
you have a weakened immune system – for example you’re having chemotherapy or living with HIV
you’re pregnant

What are the other types of thrush?

Oral thrush – This is caused by an overgrowth of the candida fungus in the mouth area. Symptoms of oral thrush include white patches in the mouth that can be wiped off to leave red patches; a loss of taste or an unpleasant taste in the mouth; and pain or a burning sensation in the mouth. Oral thrush may be triggered by smoking, a recent course of antibiotics, poor oral hygiene, or wearing dentures.
Fungal skin infections – These are known as tinea infections and there are several types that affect different areas of the body. Some examples are ringworm, fungal nail infections and athlete’s foot.
