What is in Canesten Thrush Combi (Pessary and External Cream)?

Canesten Thrush Combi (Pessary and External Cream) is a combination pack of a single 500mg pessary and a tube of 2% external cream. Both items contain the active ingredient clotrimazole. Clotrimazole is an antifungal used to treat thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection caused by the fungus Candida that can affect the genitals of both men and women. Symptoms of thrush include irritation and itchiness in the affected area, as well as white discharge.

How does Clotrimazole work?

Clotrimazole works by blocking the production of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungi cell membrane. This causes the fungal cell to break down, thereby preventing Candida from growing and spreading.

What is Canesten Thrush Combi (Pessary and External Cream) used for?

The cream is used to treat vaginal thrush. It may be used by women who are suffering from dryness or who prefer it over a tablet.

The pessary is for vaginal-use only. It should be inserted as high as possible into the vagina using the applicator included in the box. For a more comfortable treatment, the treatment should be applied just before bed.

The cream should be thinly applied to the external surrounding area, two or three times daily and rubbed in gently. If symptoms do not improve after 7 days, consult your doctor.

If the cream is being used for treatment of the sexual partner’s penis it should be applied two or three times daily for up to two weeks.

The treatment should clear the infection within three days of use. However, if symptoms still persist after seven days of use, please consult your doctor.

Is it safe to use Canesten Thrush Pessary and Canesten External Cream together?

Yes, you can use Canesten Thrush Pessary at the same time as Canesten 1%  External or Canesten 2% External Cream. The pessary will fight the infection from within, while the cream can be applied externally in order to provide relief from itch.
