What is Zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan is a medication designed specifically to treat migraine attacks with or without an aura (temporary visual sensory disturbances). Zolmitriptan treats acute migraine attacks, which means zolmitriptan should be taken at the start of a migraine, or when you feel like a migraine is coming on. Zolmitriptan does not prevent migraines from occurring in the future, and therefore should not be taken if you are not suffering from a migraine attack.

How does zolmitriptan work?

Zolmitriptan is a medicine belonging to a group of drugs called serotonin (5-HT1) agonists (or ‘triptans’). Zolmitriptan is designed to specifically treat migraines. Migraines are thought to involve chemical changes in the brain that cause a widening or swelling of blood vessels in the brain, which produces the throbbing pain. Zolmitriptan constricts these blood vessels and reduces the release of certain brain chemicals which helps relieve the symptoms of migraine.

How do I take zolmitriptan?

The recommended dose is 2.5mg however some people may require a higher dose of 5mg.

Take one dose as early as possible after the onset of a migraine headache. You can take this with or without food. If another headache occurs, you can take another dose at least 2 hours after the last one.

Can I take pain killers with zolmitriptan?

You can take painkillers such as paracetamol, aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. It is not advisable to take any opioid painkillers like codeine, dihydrocodeine or co-codamol as these can make you feel even more nauseous (feeling sick) during a migraine attack.
