What is sildenafil?

Sildenafil is a prescription-only medication belonging to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Sildenafil is used to treat Erectile Dysfunction (ED) in adult men. ED is a common condition where a man is unable to get or keep an erection. Approximately 50% of men will suffer from ED in their lifetime. ED can be caused by an advancing age, stress, anxiety, alcohol and certain drugs.

How does sildenafil work?

Sildenafil blocks the action of the naturally-occurring PDE5 enzyme. PDE5 is responsible for restricting blood flow to the penis. By blocking the action of PDE5, blood flow to the penis increases, therefore helping the patient obtain and maintain an erection.

For sildenafil to work, the patient must be sexually aroused or stimulated.

Sildenafil is not indicated for use in women.

What is the difference between sildenafil and Viagra?

Viagra and sildenafil are the same medication. They both work the exact same way and are equally as effective. The only difference is that Viagra is the specific brand of sildenafil whilst sildenafil is a generic medication. How long does it take for sildenafil to work?

Sildenafil usually reaches peak effectiveness within 30 minutes of taking the dose, and may last in the body for up to 4 hours post dose before its effects start to diminish. It may take slightly longer for the effect to kick in if sildenafil is taken on a full stomach.

How do I take Sildenafil?

Sildenafil comes in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg tablets.

The usual dose is 50mg when required (no more than once a day). The dose can be increased to 100mg or reduced to 25mg depending on effect.

Sildenafil should be taken as and when required, approximately half an hour to 1 hour before expected intercourse. Sildenafil can be taken with or without food.

Sildenafil is not intended to be taken as daily medication. Taking sildenafil daily does not cure or prevent ED, and the effect of sildenafil only lasts up to 4 hours post dose.

Can I drink alcohol with sildenafil?

Alcohol can make it more difficult to get an erection. It is not advisable to drink heavily before taking sildenafil.

Can I use recreational drugs with sildenafil?

The safety of sildenafil has not been tested with recreational drugs. When taken together, some recreational drugs like poppers (amyl nitrate) can have a dangerous effect on your heart.

Potential Side Effects

Sildenafil is generally well tolerated.Sometimes sildenafil can cause facial flushing, feeling sick, headaches, indigestion, muscle pains, vision disturbances, a stuffy nose, dizziness.

Some people may also be allergic to the medication and come up with a skin rash, itching, swelling around the lips and face, difficulty breathing or swallowing. If this happens, stop the medication immediately and seek medical attention.
